How to Play Highway Racer
Dodge traffic at 200 km/h, grab nitro, chase the high score.
Highway Racer is a top-down three-lane traffic dodger where your speed only goes up. Cars, trucks and the occasional ambulance fill the lanes ahead, and you tap or swipe to slip between them. Every close pass counts as a near miss, which adds bonus metres and charges your nitro. The day cycles into dusk and night as you drive, which changes how far ahead you can read traffic.
Distance is your score, but the fun is in the chain: near misses in quick succession raise a multiplier up to x5, and a completely full boost meter unlocks nitro that smashes straight through traffic. A garage offers five cars with different lane-change handling, unlocked by distance and bought with coins, plus daily missions that pay well for specific feats.
Controls
- Touch: tap the left or right side of the screen to change lanes, or swipe sideways.
- Desktop: Left/Right arrows or A/D to change lanes.
- Nitro: tap the nitro button when the meter is full; on desktop press Up arrow, Shift, Space or Enter.
- Lane changes start instantly but take a moment to complete; better cars switch faster.
How to play, step by step
- Tap START ENGINE; the car accelerates on its own.
- Switch lanes to slip through gaps; there is always at least one free lane.
- Pass cars closely for near misses, which add metres and charge the boost meter.
- Keep near misses coming to raise the chain multiplier.
- With a full meter, fire nitro to smash through traffic.
- Grab nitro, coin and shield pickups; avoid oil slicks. A crash ends the run.
Rules and scoring
- Score is distance in metres; each km milestone raises traffic difficulty.
- Near miss: 10 bonus metres times the chain multiplier (3 = x2, 5 = x3, 8 = x5); the chain fades if you wait too long.
- Nitro lasts 2.6 seconds at up to 330 km/h and pays 25 metres per smashed car.
- A shield absorbs one collision. Oil slicks spin you and bleed speed.
- Ambulances shove nearby cars sideways; lane drifters signal before sliding into a blocked lane.
- Cars: Ember free; Aqua 500 m and 300 coins; Venom 1500 m and 800; Nova 3000 m and 1500; Bullion 5000 m and 3000.
Tips to score higher
- Change lanes late. A wide pass pays nothing; a close one pays metres and meter.
- Three quick near misses double every bonus, eight give x5, so hunt dense traffic.
- Save nitro for a wall of trucks; smashing pays per vehicle and clears lanes you could not pass.
- A signalling car always moves into a blocked lane, so hold your free lane.
- Buy cars for lane-change speed (Ember 1.0 up to Bullion 1.5), not looks.
- Check TODAY'S MISSIONS first; a 40 near-miss mission pays 120 coins and suits a chain run.
Modes and challenges
- Endless run with a day, dusk, night and dawn cycle.
- Daily challenge worth 200 coins, such as 1500 m in a run or 30 near misses.
- Rotating missions paying 60 to 160 coins for near misses, trucks, road coins and distance.
- Garage: five cars unlocked by distance and bought with coins.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get nitro?
Near misses fill the boost meter 20 percent each, times your chain; nitro pickups fill it too. When full, tap the nitro button or press Up, Shift, Space or Enter.
What is a near miss?
Passing a vehicle within a narrow lane distance while alongside it. It adds to the chain, which drops back to x1 if you wait too long.
Why did I spin out without hitting anything?
You drove over an oil slick. Slicks sit in already blocked lanes, so they are always avoidable.
How do I unlock a new car?
Reach its distance requirement in one run, then buy it in GARAGE with coins from missions, road coins and the daily challenge.
